2. Getting the Best Deal

In this session, the conference speakers and questions from participants focus on examples of economic engagement, leveraging the financial and industrial power of the local state and its workforce to secure gains for local people. We want to assess their strengths and limitations.

Chair – Margaret Turner, Campaign Co-ordinator of Wansbeck CLP

Cllr Matthew Brown – Labour Councillor and Leader of Preston Council. The architect of the ‘Preston Model’ which aims to get major institutions in Preston to focus more of their buying and investment within the city boundaries.  Senior Fellow for the promotion of Community Wealth Building with the The Democracy Collaborative.

Ian Mearns MP – Labour MP for Gateshead. Previously a Gateshead Councillor from 1983 – 2010.

Sarah Woolley – Recently elected General Secretary of BFAWU (Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union)– its first ever female leader. Member of GFTU (General Federation of Trade Unions).

Ian Lavery MP – Ex-miner. Trade Unionist. MP for Wansbeck.

  1. Labour Supporting Communities

In this session the conference speakers and questions from participants focus on examples of local labour parties enabling and partnering communities to organise themselves. The aim being to meet basic needs in working class communities while building Labour values. We want to assess successful approaches and consider basic toolkits local parties can adopt.

Chair – Caroline Ball, Political Education Officer of Wansbeck CLP

Jane Marshall – CLP Chair of Broxtowe Labour who has transformed her Labour hub into a food bank for the local community.

Victoria Tingle – A Labour member who created a toy library in her local Labour hub for her local community.

Sotez Chowdhury – Expert Community Organiser and the ex-Lead Organiser of Labour’s Community Organising Unit. Visiting Lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London, a Community Organiser in Tower Hamlets for London Citizens and a Former London Chair of the Emerging Leaders Advisory Board at the Young Foundation.

Alan McNiven – Chief Executive of Engage Renfrewshire which supports local community action, volunteering, and social enterprise. Alan is also Chair of Renfrewshire’s forum for empowering communities and a member of the Scottish FA, developing community football clubs’ advisory groups and a member of Paisley Legacy Board.
